Yes to Life, Spain
Manifesto
March 7, 2010
Today there is scientific evidence that a new human life appears from the moment of fecundation. This has been confirmed by the Madrid Manifest, made public in March 2009 and signed by more than 3000 Spanish scientists.
In view of this certainty we may affirm that abortion involves the violent death of a human being and that it is a terrible drama for the woman who suffers from it.
The number of abortions effected in Spain has already surpassed the million mark; nonetheless neither information nor social assistance are being offered to pregnant women in difficult situations. Meanwhile, financial support is indeed available for them to have an abortion.
Now the Government wishes to approve a term-law which will leave the new being completely unprotected and will abandon the woman to her problems, thus driving her to abort. On the other hand, this bill considers the sick and disabled as second-class human beings and allows them to be eliminated prior to birth.
The bill also provides for minors to abort without parental consent, thus abandoning them to themselves and hindering their parents from helping their daughters in case of an unexpected pregnancy.
In addition the new law intends to impose a certain type of sex education in schools, infringing upon the right of parents to educate their children in accordance with their own moral convictions.
With unrestricted abortion the number of dead children would almost double, as well as the number of women who would suffer from the well-known physical and psychological harm which abortion inflicts upon them.
The response from Spanish society to this announcement has been striking: massive marches, concentrations and demonstrations in favor of the right to life, opinion polls clearly against the bill and diverse manifests signed by thousands of Spaniards who demand the realization of policies favourable to life and maternity.
Nevertheless, the Government has turned a deaf ear to this social outcry and intends to carry on with a law that Spain does not want.
In view of all this,
WE DEMAND
- That the Government listen to Spanish society and withdraw the abortion bill which it intends to approve.
- That our politicians promote laws which protect the right to life and the right to be a mother, safeguarding life at all times and helping pregnant women to overcome any problems that an unforeseen pregnancy may cause them.
- That the right of parents to form their children in regard to sex education according to their own convictions be respected.
- That the right of health personnel to conscientious objection be respected, so that they may fulfill their commitment to defend and care for life and health from the very instant of conception.
